- Chapter 1 presented the story of John Knight, a heart attack victim from the Coalfields (Hunter Valley) of Australia, touching upon individual and cultural forces leading up to his illness and recovery. In this chapter we probe much deeper into the story of heart disease in the Australian Coalfields. Principles of complexity theory are applied to a body of transdisciplinary research on coronary heart disease in this region. Our analysis deals predominantly with heart disease in males and reveals how the social is linked to the biologcal. Insights from this analysis support our argument that transdisciplinary thinklng maximises understanding of the complexity of human health.
